holiday cheer.

My all time favorite Christmases come once every three years.  They are the ones spent in England in a sprawling rented house in the Devon countryside, filled with my family – aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.  That being said, it’s Christmas in the states that is “best dressed!”   Here’s a little peak at what the holidays look like at home.  Note: these pictures are from last year, this year I’m headed (hopefully) over to England!

I couldn’t resist sharing the yumminess of my annual Christmas waffle.  The secret: homemade strawberry sauce.

So excited to see the little bro!

And just in case you are interested, my earrings are by Chelsea Gwynne.

quick (girly) gifts.

Though last weekend was dedicated to outlet shopping in Freeport and boutique shopping in Portland – I somehow still have gifts to buy.  It’s a good thing it’s such an enchantingl time of year (and that shopping is one of my specialties).  Here are a few affordable little gifts for all of you last minute shoppers (like me!)…

Lighten up any room with these fabulously footed mercury glass hurricanes from West Elm.

Every hostess needs the cutest in kitchen accessories. This oven mitt and pot holder will make sure you’re burn free and looking good at your next dinner party.

If you were at the L.L. Bean flagship in Freeport last Saturday, you could have snagged a signed copy of The Preppy Handbook’s sequel, True Prep.  (I did!)

Furbish studio is home to this eclectic zebra bangle in the cutest of colors.

I adore these simple Kate Spade posts! The classic studs come in every jewel tone you could possibly wear.

Why didn’t I think of this first? Yup, those sparkly little hearts just clip right on any old pair of flats – ingeniousness from ban.do!

I am always in need of an umbrella that makes the rainy days feel not so dreary. Jonathan Adler has the solution with sunny prints to brighten the cloudiest day.

I was given a very similar clutch for my birthday (thank you Al & Jennifer!) and I just love it so much that I think you should have one too!! EmersonMade’s gorgeous silk flowers make for the perfect details like here on her clutch or you can purchase flowers alone – perfect to perk up your favorite tee!

These are quite possibly the cutest golf balls ever! Iomoi has a great selection of gifts under $50.

Looking for an art lover pressie? What about a museum membership? One of my current obsessions: the MFA and it’s new wing.

Christmas shopping in the Portland area? You must stop at Foundry Lane for chic home accents and unique jewels, LeRoux Kitchen for anything and everything cooking, plus deliciously flavored vinegars and EVOO’s (black truffle..mmm) and Asia West for table covers, beautiful Japanese bowls and $15 throw pillows – yes, please!

a cheese plate.

We celebrated fall at Unity Street a few weeks ago with a quaint dinner party and Alison’s killer cheese plate!  Tooth picks with cheese descriptions were the biggest hit – now we know which ones we like for next time.

I nabbed a few last minute decor pieces from work to make a fresh yet autumnal centerpiece – the perfect compliment to the zebra print napkins.

spoiled.

As any good Prettier Party followers know – last year Vassar gave me www.theprettierparty.com for my birthday – ingenious!  I wasn’t quite sure how he was going to top that but year’s presents were just as brilliant.

I haven’t had a day that I wanted to relive over and over and OVER again for a while now.  But this week, I can’t help but wish to be whisked away again and again to the Inn at Castle Hill, where I spent Saturday luxuriously celebrating my birthday.  A huge thank you to Vassar because literally everything was absolutely perfect.

The Inn sits on the same property as the Crane Estate in Ipswich and was once inhabited by the Crane family while they renovated the mansion.  The first floor has been maintained to appear as though the house once was with a plethora of window seats and reading nooks, traditional furniture and a glowing fireplace.  The sun-filled dining room is set for about twenty guests and the pantry (filled with gourmet teas, coffees and cookies) is accessible 24 hours for guests.  Hello, unlimited freshly baked cookies?  Yes, friends, that is heaven.

Then we arrived at our room, the Higinbotham Room, which was perched on the third floor of the house over looking the marsh and the ocean with three window seats, a cozy day bed and quite possibly the greatest discovery of my life, a sumptuous, over-stuffed king-sized bed.  In case you are not aware, an amazing nights sleep is a rare occurrence in my life, one that I spend entirely far too much time attempting to obtain and on Saturday, I had the most fulfilling nights sleep for months (!!!!).

Note to self, must purchase a king sized bed immediately.  Do not pass go, do not collect golden retriever puppy, just replicate that bed (and squeeze it into my teeny North End pad).

Later on Saturday night we found ourselves in the adorable town of Newburyport for the most divine dinner at 10 Center Street.  Surrounded by fireplaces, we sat under thick exposed ceiling beams and savored their fall menu.  I had the fall squash soup & beet, frisee, apricot, feta salad topped with a garlic vinaigrette – yum.

Add to all of that upcoming vegetarian cooking classes, a subscription to my guilty pleasure (US Weekly), a farm fresh sunny-side-up breakfast and a morning stroll around the estate – it might just have been the best birthday yet.

art on the affordable.

Mostly, I am obsessed with 20×200 because I found this.  The ultimate Christmas present (aside from perhaps a live domesticated piglet or a puppy) – a piglet print!

Sharon Montrose - Piglet 2

But also, I am obsessed because everything is so chic and so inexpensive!  All you need is a Christmas Tree Shop frame and tada – the perfect $30 gift.

Jane Mount - Ideal Bookshelf 101: Robert Verdi

Youngna Park - Winter Flags (East Village, New York)

Online-window-shopping for fun prints, gorging on Monica’s antipasto and a glass of vino rosso all adds up to the perfect last night in November night – delish.

pillow shopping on etsy.

Etsy has an awesome collection of throw pillows.  Such an easy way to update a space, throw pillows are ideal for adding to pop of color or a fun print that you don’t want to use in a big area like a wall.  Check out a few of these affordable options!  Luckily I’m just window shopping… this could turn into a dangerous afternoon activity.

I think these are my favorite from LynniesThisandThat!

Soothing and delicate from The Cottage Cupboard.

I have an addiction to lime green!!  Check out these cute pillows from FabricJunkie1604.

This coral pillow from Kainkain would be perfect for my friend Amanda’s nautical home!  They also have sea stars to match.

And keeping up with trends – this Nenavon geometric trellis pillow in gray is just fabulous.   I want!

All these great finds make me want to go pillow crazy!

PS.  This is my 101st post!!!!

paradise in lowcountry.

Two weeks ago, I took a vacation.  It wasn’t until I touched down at the Savannah/Hilton Head airport that I realized quite how much I needed this vacation.  Despite being a full-fledged member of America’s nine-to-five work force for over three years now, I have yet to come to terms with the fact that days off don’t automatically include a spring break, a (three month) summer break, and a Christmas break, not to mention, Thanksgiving and other various long weekends in between.  As I have now realized, vacation days are precious, but taking a week-long (or longer) vacation is even more vital to the sanity of one’s nine-to-five existence.   And so seven days in a beautiful, beach-front sanctuary on Hilton Head Island was just the fix for my over-scheduled existence – lots of reading and relaxing with a spattering of fancy cocktails, all with wonderful friends.

The first six days pretty much looked like this:

Then on Friday, Helen and Colin, joined us and completely spoiled us with a visit to a very special place, Palmetto Bluff.  Palmetto Bluff is a resort that has essentially every thing you would need to survive in complete luxury in a single location for forever, hence a modern day utopia.

And as we all very well know, utopia is the perfect place for a wedding.  From the quintessential southern architecture, the perfect landscaping, to the wispy Spanish moss that romantically drapes over the branches of each tree and the gas lit street lamps that line every brick walkway, this is the epitome of a gorgeous South Carolinian plantation.  There is a classic Inn, an expansive pool club complete with cabanas and cushioned day beds, and the cutest little chapel that you’ve possibly every seen; all over-looking the gorgeous May River.  Here’s a mini tour:

Look at this little chapel!  It’s just so darn cute; perfect for a wedding on the smaller side as it seats about 90 guests.

Want to tie the knot outside?  The ruins would be a stunning backdrop for any ceremony.

After exploring the grounds we had the yummiest lunch on the porch of the River House.  I have acquired a new obsession with fried green tomatoes.

I couldn’t help but take a sneak peek at the ballroom which was set for an understated autumnal celebration for the second (!!) wedding of the day.  The miniature pumpkins acted as place card holders; each had the name of a guest pinned to them.  Too cute to resist snapping a few photos!

Even the plantation’s gas station is adorable – have you ever seen such a quaint place to fill up your tank!?

Click here and here and here for a few actual weddings that took place right here – stunning!

candy coma recovery?

Yesterday, while walking around Boston and taking in the city’s vivacious spirit of Halloween I was impressed and amused by all of the costumes, not just the festive trick-or-treaters (though I loved the all-in-one pudgy animal suits that seemed to be hot this year), but most importantly, the pooches!  While the chaos of the holiday has subsided, the cute puppy pictures on Boston.com are growing by the minute – while you’re fighting your post-holiday Monday morning hangover, check out the cutest pet costumes of 2010 right here!

trick or drink?

It’s Halloween weekend (!) and naturally, the perfect occasion for a spoooooky cocktail (or two).  Head on over to Real Simple for festive cocktail recipes like Zombie Gut Punch or a Vampire Kiss Martini.

In the meantime, I will be out scavenging for the final elements of my costume – does anyone have insight into a neon pink scrunchie or a crimping iron?  In an effort to wear my hot pink leggings from last year (and after determining that being a domesticated piglet would be a bit redundant) I have decided to be an 80′s rollerblader.
