trick or drink?

Friday, October 29th, 2010

It’s Halloween weekend (!) and naturally, the perfect occasion for a spoooooky cocktail (or two).  Head on over to Real Simple for festive cocktail recipes like Zombie Gut Punch or a Vampire Kiss Martini.

In the meantime, I will be out scavenging for the final elements of my costume – does anyone have insight into a neon pink scrunchie or a crimping iron?  In an effort to wear my hot pink leggings from last year (and after determining that being a domesticated piglet would be a bit redundant) I have decided to be an 80′s rollerblader.

For this week’s happy hour fix, I defer to CT Bites (thank you Ellie for sending this great site).  They have gone in search of what the cool “people are drinking” and found it amongst several creative Connecticut bloggers.  I am obsessed with the cucumber watermelon garnish!

In honor of Amanda’s wedding THIS WEEKEND (so excited), it is only appropriate today’s happy hour treat is a drink that was consumed for the bride-to-be’s bachelorette party at Barcelona.  Refreshing in red or white, fruity and flavorful without being too sweet (if it’s done right), sangria is one of my favorite summer sips.  Plus, with all that fruit, it’s almost healthy!

Cheers to Amanda & Chris and a long, fulfilling and happy life together!

it’s here!

The happiest Fridays are those before a holiday weekend.  The excitement has been brewing since about mid-day yesterday and can only I hope that my distraction has not been too obvious!  It’s official, I am completely checked out and ready for a weekend of red, white, and blue.

The Laura Keeler cocktail of choice for July 4th, 2010 is the Berry Sucker, a slight adjustment from Rachel Ray’s Strawberry Sucker, which incorporates my fruit of the moment – blueberries.  Who would have thought that adding my favorite berry would make this the perfect color combo for sipping as we celebrate the states?

What and who are you celebrating with this weekend?

In honor of tonight (Stephanie is currently en route from New Jersey with five gallons of tequila ingredients), today I will celebrate another of summer’s best classic cocktails, the margarita.  Sweet and tangy, chilled and refreshing… is it five yet?

Happy Happy Hour Friday!!  In honor of Memorial Day, which I think we have established that I am suuuuper excited about, today is dedicated to the summer ale: the official drink of Memorial Day weekend in Damariscotta, Maine. The fact that these drinks are seasonal make it all the more exciting when they hit the shelves of local stores forecasting warm weather, longer days and beach barbeques (did you know you it’s also spelled barbecue?).

You can’t go wrong with a stainless steel bucket of delicious brews at your weekend cookout. Fill it up with local delights – Sam Summer and Harpoon Summer or Maine favorites – Gritty’s Vacationland Summer Ale and Shipyard Summer.  It’s sure to be an all around guest pleaser!

I am trying something new.  Every Friday will now be “happy hour friday” where I will feature a chosen beverage which I will highly recommend that you experience during the upcoming weekend.  Cocktails are one of the most important assets to any gathering and appropriately, I am going to highlight them with their very own day.

Last weekend, Vassar and I went to one of Boston’s new restaurants, Anthem Kitchen & Bar.  Though it is in Faneuil Hall and I spend a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how to avoid Faneuil Hall, I had high hopes for this City Table sister.  Solid food, but even better was the blueberry lemonade!  The perfect spring cocktail, this drink is sweet, tart and refreshing all at once.

2 cups of water, 4 squeezed lemons, frozen blueberries and a lemon garnish – yum yum.
