As any good Prettier Party followers know – last year Vassar gave me www.theprettierparty.com for my birthday – ingenious!  I wasn’t quite sure how he was going to top that but year’s presents were just as brilliant.

I haven’t had a day that I wanted to relive over and over and OVER again for a while now.  But this week, I can’t help but wish to be whisked away again and again to the Inn at Castle Hill, where I spent Saturday luxuriously celebrating my birthday.  A huge thank you to Vassar because literally everything was absolutely perfect.

The Inn sits on the same property as the Crane Estate in Ipswich and was once inhabited by the Crane family while they renovated the mansion.  The first floor has been maintained to appear as though the house once was with a plethora of window seats and reading nooks, traditional furniture and a glowing fireplace.  The sun-filled dining room is set for about twenty guests and the pantry (filled with gourmet teas, coffees and cookies) is accessible 24 hours for guests.  Hello, unlimited freshly baked cookies?  Yes, friends, that is heaven.

Then we arrived at our room, the Higinbotham Room, which was perched on the third floor of the house over looking the marsh and the ocean with three window seats, a cozy day bed and quite possibly the greatest discovery of my life, a sumptuous, over-stuffed king-sized bed.  In case you are not aware, an amazing nights sleep is a rare occurrence in my life, one that I spend entirely far too much time attempting to obtain and on Saturday, I had the most fulfilling nights sleep for months (!!!!).

Note to self, must purchase a king sized bed immediately.  Do not pass go, do not collect golden retriever puppy, just replicate that bed (and squeeze it into my teeny North End pad).

Later on Saturday night we found ourselves in the adorable town of Newburyport for the most divine dinner at 10 Center Street.  Surrounded by fireplaces, we sat under thick exposed ceiling beams and savored their fall menu.  I had the fall squash soup & beet, frisee, apricot, feta salad topped with a garlic vinaigrette – yum.

Add to all of that upcoming vegetarian cooking classes, a subscription to my guilty pleasure (US Weekly), a farm fresh sunny-side-up breakfast and a morning stroll around the estate – it might just have been the best birthday yet.

sea shells by the sea shore.

Colin, my very special father, celebrated 60 years of “experience” two months ago with a surprise fete.  Never have I seen my normally level-headed father overcome by such emotion – it was so pleasantly over whelming to see how surprised, happy, awed and I’m sure lots of other emotions he was when he walked into the door of our kitchen to seventeen of his friends for a birthday supper.   I, just the dinner table designer (and daughter), was incredibly moved.

It was one of those suppers where it didn’t really matter what the table looked like.  Obviously it looked nice, it was a meal by Helen and nothing goes on an undressed table at the Keeler home.  But it was an occasion where the people took priority (and now that I think about it, I suppose that they typically do, but in this instance it was more than normal).  The food, albeit delicious, was over shadowed by great company and a great celebratory excuse.

For this dinner on the water, I visited the infamous Christmas Tree Shops eager to find the perfect centerpieces to compliment the yellow and white gingham table cloth at our almost beach venue.  I found them in the glassware isle (for $1.99 each), filled them with Pottery Barn sand and pre-filled votives, and topped it all of with a slew of sea shells.  The finishing touch, Twos Company Neptune Sea Shell Place Card Holders gave everyone their spot on the table.

And of course, the grand finale of the night was a little-bit-too-large White Chocolate Mousse and Raspberry cake from Aux Delices.  It was absolutely melt-in-your-mouth amazing!

Happy Birthday to The Prettier Party!  I can’t believe where I was a year ago and where I am now – it seems like almost everything has changed in such interesting and wonderful ways.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to all of my friends and followers – you make it so much fun to share my thoughts and tid-bits with the cyber world.   (Just a side note, if one of you wanted to send me one of those cakes, you’d become my favorite).

One thing I have learned on my many trips to England is greeting cards are just SO much better over there!  While the “Party Dog” didn’t come from the UK (it came from the North End’s cutest boutique, Shake the Tree), it is a design by England’s The Art Group.  I can’t give away the birthday gal’s gift here – but I will note that it is absolutely Prettier Party-worthy and perfect for summer!

I can’t wait to celebrate in New York tonight!

granny’s 80th birthday.

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Now that I have successfully procrastinated enough from my long weekend in England (two weeks later, I still have serious jet lag).  It’s time to show off a few photos from Granny’s wonderful 80th Birthday organized by her very fabulous daughters.  And with much help from Helen (my very tasteful mother who luckily passed on her genes) and her three sisters, I was able to design the table and spruce up the space.

The private dining room in the Quod Brasserie & Bar at Oxford’s hip Old Bank Hotel is very much a blank slate.  After scoping out the space and deciding on the physical arrangement of the room, we set off to the flower market determined to infuse color into the evening. Determining a pink, green and silver inspiration, Helen and I tried our hand at very amateur flower arranging. We incorporated a silver sparkle into the decor with customized silver and pink balloons and birthday confetti, and dressed small cocktail tables with a sweet potted plant and lots of votives.  Ta-da!  A very bland space probably used more often for meetings than birthday parties was transformed into a warm, glowing space for cocktails and a delicious celebration.

Future warning: if you are ever looking for cheesy accessories that say “80″ you had better start collecting well in advance.  At every party shop I went into in London I opened the door with hope only to find that you can celebrate turning 10, 18, 21, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, and even 70, or “Congratulations!”  Do not enough people turn 80? Or at that point does it become a matter of – congrats! you lasted this long? While stateside, Helen was able to successfully locate one silver 80 for the center flower vase.

And the party itself?  Well, as usual, you know it’s been a success when the birthday girl has to be taken home early.

pitas and pears.

It was decided that I would host a cocktail party complete with a signature beverage and an array of hors d’oeuvres to celebrate my birthday. Thank goodness for Trader Joe’s! After stocking up on some serious supplies, we got to work. The signature drink of the evening was the “Fizzy Pear” which was comprised of a splash of pear brandy, sparkling wine and a pear garnish. Very boozy but very delish.

My favorite appetizers of the evening were easy to make and fun to eat – thanks to TJ’s mini pita pouches. Slice these bite-sized pitas in half and fill them with either tabouli or hummus and a half cuke slice for a delightful, easy to eat treat!

My floral crown by Rhia made my birthday party much much prettier!
PS. How fabulous is my flower accessory from Anthropologie? Also care of Rhia (yes, she has amazing taste) – it is either a pin or a slide so can be used to accent almost anything – a coat, a top, a ponytail, a bag, a headband, a necklace, I could go on…

breakfast delivery!

Just as enjoyable as breakfast in bed!

My adorable friend, Jennifer, has the fortune/misfortune of celebrating her birthday on July the 5th. Yes, she is always surrounded by friends and enjoys a long weekend, but sometimes the festivities surrounding the birth of our nation over-shadow those pertaining to the entry of our beautiful Southern Belle into this wonderful land. This year we had her family to the rescue, and wow did they do a great job.

They called up Rebecca Thorpe with Girl Admiral, an event planning group based in Fairfield, Connecticut. Rebecca delivered a gorgeous breakfast spread for thirty to the door, including mimosas, fresh fruit skewers, chocolate chip scones with nutella, bacon, mini spinach, egg and cheese casseroles, a delicious red velvet cake and flower arrangement. It was an absolutely delightful way to start the morning!

Check out Rebecca’s very cute and equally inspiring blog The Girl in Charge.
